PennMed Votes

Penn Med Votes is an interdepartmental, student run organization that provides emergency absentee ballots to hospitalized patients. For the 2018 mid-term elections, GHHS partnered with the organization to help expand their efforts to Presbyterian Hospital and HUP. This resulted in nearly 100 patients casting their vote while in the hospital.

Student Clinicians Ceremony

The Student Clinicians Ceremony, founded by GHHS nationally, was held for second year medical students at the Perelman School of Medicine prior to their transition to their clinical year. The ceremony provides space for students to re-state their values and intentions as they begin, arguably, the most developmentally rich year of medical school.

Solidarity Week

Solidarity Week recognizes /celebrates our dedication to ensuring compassionate, patient-centered care. This year, Penn GHHS highlighted the history and current affairs of PennMed’s relationship with the West Philadelphia community. Through various events, we provided our students in-place opportunities to learn of the diverse patient populations we serve / call neighbors.

Salt In My Soul, An Unfinished Life

Salt In My Soul, An Unfinished Life is the published narrative of Mallory Smith, a brilliant young woman who lived most of her life with cystic fibrosis before passing away from a multi drug resistant infection after receiving bilateral lung transplants in 2017. Penn GHHS hosted a book tour panel discussion with Mallory’s parents, Mark and Diane, to hold space for their daughter’s story at Penn Medicine.

Health Equity Week • No Más Bebés Film

No Más Bebés details the sterilization of Mexican immigrant mothers giving birth at L.A. County-USC Medical Center in the 1960s and 1970s. As part of Penn Medicine’s Health Equity Week, Penn GHHS will partner with Students Opposed to Racism in Medicine (StORM) to host a film screening and panel discussion to explore how the film’s narrative parallels current racial and reproductive justice efforts in Philadelphia and beyond.

University of Pennsylvania & Slavery Project

The Penn&Slavery History Project is an undergraduate student initiative determined to research and publish the university’s ties to slavery. Penn GHHS, in partnership with the Office of Inclusion and Diversity, stands in solidarity with these students and their efforts. In doing so, we hope to further our understanding and rectification of how our academic legacies have contributed to racist structures and practices.

Penn Gold Humanism Honor Society Induction Ceremony • 2019

This spring, Penn GHHS had the honor of inducting 20 new members from the 2016 matriculating class at the Perelman School of Medicine. Three residents and two faculty members that exemplified the mission and work of our chapter were also inducted

Penn Medicine Move Out Donation Drive

The Penn Medicine Move Out Donation Drive was established to collect monetary donations from medical students who are selling their furniture and other belongings prior to moving. All proceeds were donated to Project HOME.

Creativity in Medicine Conference 2019

The Doctors Who Create inaugural Creativity in Medicine Conference was host by the College of Physicians of Philadelphia at the Mütter Museum. Penn GHHS members were honored to sponsor and volunteer at this incredible event.
